Aguda has seen reports of stabbing and attempted murders
March 12, 2025 14:30Several recent reports from Israel indicate that attackers are using the popular dating app Grindr to target LGBTQ individuals, resulting in a series of violent assaults, including stabbings and attempted lynchings.
Aguda, the Israeli Association for LGBTQ Equality, has documented at least ten such incidents in recent months, raising concerns within the Israeli LGBTQ community from Haifa and the Krayot regions.
The attackers reportedly create fake profiles on Grindr to arrange meetings with victims at remote locations, where they are ambushed and assaulted with sharp objects.
Two particularly violent cases, both involving stabbings and attempted murder, were reported in late February.
Some victims have chosen not to report the attacks, complicating efforts to track down the perpetrators.
Aguda has urged those affected to file complaints with the police, emphasising that each report could help prevent further violence.
In response to the attacks, Aguda and the Israel Internet Association have issued safety guidelines for Grindr users.
They advise being cautious of profiles without photos or with images that appear altered and warn against meeting individuals who refuse to share updated photos, phone numbers, or engage in video calls.
The organisations also stress the importance of avoiding isolated areas and instead meeting in well-lit, public spaces.
Grindr, launched in 2009, is a dating app designed to help members of the LGBTQ community connect.
It is owned by Israeli tech entrepreneur Joel Simkhai, who founded the app to provide a safe and efficient platform for LGBTQ+ people. However, recent events have raised concerns about its misuse for malicious purposes.
Authorities are urging anyone who has experienced an attack or threat to contact the police or Aguda’s confidential support hotline. Reports can be made anonymously to assist in the investigation.
