He's worth £50m, but Raheem's mum carries on caring

With a multi-millionaire footballer for a son, you might have thought Nadine Sterling would be living a life of luxury.

But while her 20-year-old boy Raheem (right), the Liverpool and England star, is on the brink of a £50 million transfer which will net him an even greater fortune, Mrs Sterling is content to carry on the day job - as a nurse at a Jewish care home.

"I've worked in the Jewish community for a good while now," she said this week, taking a break from her duties at the Sidney and Ruza Last Foundation in Golders Green, where she looks after its elderly residents and visitors to its specialist Alzheimer's unit.

Born in Jamaica, she settled her family in north-west London when Raheem, one of four siblings, was five.

The footballer, whose father was shot dead in Jamaica, describes his mother "as a very determined lady".

Colleagues at the home praised her down-to-earth manner. She is "just a normal member of staff who is lovely with residents", said one manager.

It is just as well she is not tempted to schep naches over her famous son - most of the elderly people she cares for "aren't interested in football".
