A tweet from the Guardian caused an outcry on Wednesday, after it incorrectly blamed Israel for ignoring the ceasefire with Hamas.
The newspaper wrote on its official Twitter account, which is seen by 2.4 million followers: “Gaza ceasefire collapses as Israel army resumes attack.”
In response to the report, Israeli Embassy spokesperson Yiftah Curiel wrote: “Really?! How about ‘it collapses as Hamas fires 47 rockets at population centres’?”
Following immediate complaints from online readers, the line was removed and replaced with the statement: “Gaza ceasefire ends after Hamas rejects proposals and resumes rocket attacks.”
Earlier in the day, Israel had agreed to a ceasefire deal with Hamas during negotiations in Cairo. However, Hamas leaders declined to accept and instead decided to continue with their offensive.
