The government has launched a review of the coroner system, including how it treats the needs of faith groups.
Justice Minister Caroline Dinenage said the wide-ranging review would "find out whether coroner services are responsive to faith group needs, particularly those who require less invasive post-mortem examinations and timely funerals such as Jewish and Muslim communities".
The consultation will run for eight weeks. Ms Dinenage said the government wanted to hear from users of the service, including bereaved families.
Jewish and Muslim communities welcomed the review when it was announced earlier this year.
● Environmental campaigners have made a formal complaint against Southwark Council, claiming it is discriminating against Jews and Muslims in its burial policy.
Jewish comedian Lewis Schaffer, who lives in the south-London borough, said there was no provision for Jewish or Muslim interments in the area's three cemeteries.
Mr Schaffer is a member of Save Southwark Woods, which is hoping to preserve an area of woodland that the council plans to convert into a burial ground.
But the council denied religious discrimination and said two Jewish people had been buried in the borough's cemeteries over the past three years.
