Google is investigating how the description “Essex jews place of worship” was added to Liverpool’s Anfield stadium on its Maps service.
The phrase appeared on the site for three hours on Monday, ahead of Tottenham Hotspur’s match at Anfield on tomorrow night.
Google has now removed it.
Tottenham Hotspur has a large Jewish following, with many of its fans calling themselves the “Yid Army”.
A spokesperson for Google said it was looking into how someone could have abused the service’s Map Maker tool in this way. The function is supposed to be carefully moderated.
Abusive descriptions, although not referring to Jews, have also been added to Tottenham’s and Arsenal’s stadiums in the last week.
