Grandmother Gilda Baron has been picked to take part in a new television series on textile art.
Talking Threads, thought to be the first-ever TV programme devoted to the subject, is to be screened next month on the Country Channel, available on Sky 171 and online.
During the ten-part series, each of the nine artists talk about their creative influences and demonstrate their favourite techniques. The programme aims to introduce textile art to a wider audience.
Ms Baron, 72, tells People: “Sadly, textiles has become a neglected aspect of the visual arts.” She first became interested in textile art following a career in the fashion industry.
She has since developed her own style to create vibrant 3-D landscapes, which has brought her international acclaim and has exhibited extensively around the UK. Her book, The Art of Embroidered Flowers, has been added to Waterstone’s list of best-selling craft books.
And she has no plans to slow down. “My diary is already packed with shows and exhibitions well into 2010.” There is also a DVD and project for Women’s Weekly in the pipeline.
