Actor and comedian Stephen Fry has put his money where his mouth is to take Rainbow Jews - the gay and lesbian oral history project hosted by Liberal Judaism - to a £5,000 crowdfunding target to continue its work.

The project's activities include an archive and exhibition documenting testimonies from British LGBT Jews and exploring the struggles, changes and issues experienced by the community from the 1950s to the present day.

Fry initially gave £500, tweeting: "You can help save Britain's pioneering Jewish LGBT history project @RainbowJews from closing down. Donate now." His donation was accompanied by a message wishing good Yomtov to all - "from the libbest liberals to the frummest frummers".

However, with the funding deadline approaching and £1,735 still required, Fry made good the shortfall.

This time the message was: "Hope that helps you over the line."

Project manager Surat Shaan Knan said: "We are excited about Stephen Fry's support, urging his six million-plus followers to donate to Rainbow Jews. This was really the last chance to save this pioneering oral history initiative."

With the appeal target having been met, Rainbow Jews is now looking for long-term patrons.
