John Galliano is rejoining the fashion world three years after an antisemitic rant saw him fired from Dior and excommunicated from the industry.

The British designer has been taken on as creative director of fashion house Maison Martin Margiela.

Mr Galliano, 53, spent almost 15 years at Dior before his drunken antisemitic rant in La Perle, a bar in Paris in 2011.

Videos posted online showed the high-profile designer saying "I love Hitler" and telling a group of La Perle customers: "People like you would be dead. Your mothers, your forefathers, would all be f****** gassed."

He was convicted for making antisemitic insults and fined, and French president Francois Hollande later removed his legion of honour.

Mr Galliano blamed the rant on drugs and alcohol and has since undergone rehabilitation.
In 2013 he told Vanity Fair magazine: "It's the worst thing I have said in my life, but I didn't mean it.... I have been trying to find out why that anger was directed at this race. I now realise I was so f**king angry and so discontent with myself that I just said the most spiteful thing I could."

Paris haute couture week in January will be his first show for Maison Martin Margiela.
