Ex-Tory leader Michael Howard confronted Benjamin Netanyahu as the Israeli PM insisted the deaths of more 100 Palestinian protesters on the Gaza border in recent weeks were unavoidable.

Mr Netanyahu was speaking at an event in Westminster on Thursday when Lord Howard asked how he justified the heavy death and injury toll at recent protests.

Lord Howard told Mr Netanyahu: "Many people will sympathise with and understand the need to stop the people scaling the fence at Gaza  and of course you're absolutely right that the protests were not peaceful.

"But fewer people sympathise with and understand your proposition that the only way to stop people scaling the fence was to kill them. Why couldn't you use rubber bullets?
