Footballer's court date over assault

articlemain

The amateur footballer who allegedly fractured a spectator's cheekbone during a Sunday league game will face serious assault charges on July 15.

Mike Filson, a solicitor from Manchester, will appear at a local magistrates court over the reported headbutt on Leeds Maccabi committee member Elliot Landy.

A spokeswoman from West Yorkshire Police confirmed that Mr Filson is "due to appear at Leeds Magistrates Court on July 15, afternoon session at 1.30".

The solicitor, who was voluntarily interviewed by police, will face the charge of grievous bodily harm, which carries a maximum prison sentence of five years and can also result in an unlimited fine.

The alleged attack happened during a Manchester Jewish Soccer League match on April 26, between Mr Filson's club, South Manchester, and Leeds Maccabi.

Mr Filson was expelled by his club over the incident.

The game - which ended in a 6-0 defeat for Mr Filson's club - was a repeat of last season's Tony Cohen Memorial Trophy final, which Leeds won after Mr Filson was sent off for persistent dissent.

Mr Filson's solicitor, Daniel Berke, declined to comment.
