Football team walk off after racist abuse

articlemain

The Football Association is investigating claims that antisemitic taunts were made during a match involving a Jewish under-16 team.

Manchester Maccabi players were called "Jewish pricks" and told "you've got no foreskins" in their game against Curzon Ashton in a local Manchester league.

Maccabi's manager Anthony Dennison removed his players from the pitch in the face of the abuse.

He said: "Sooner or later you've got to say enough is enough

"Curzon Ashton's behaviour was appalling. The manager has got my number; he should have got on the phone and apologised, and his club should have apologised, too.

"They didn't seem remotely interested in the abuse," the Manchester Maccabi manager claimed.

Mr Dennison said that a Curzon Ashton player involved in the incident was asked to leave the pitch by the referee.

"He wasn't sent off - he should have been, but the referee asked their manager to escort him off," he said.

Mr Dennison denied he had withdrawn his side because they were losing 9-2.

"It's not about the points. I don't want those points," he said.

Manchester County FA (MCFA) were alerted to the incident and reported it to the national FA.

MCFA communications officer Alex Rowan said his organisation was working with the FA and anti-racism organisation Kick It Out to resolve the matter.

"We take complaints of this type very seriously.

"We've had statements from both clubs, so if there is a charge raised it will certainly be released by the end of the week."

The manager of Curzon Ashton, Paul Price said that the FA has advised his club not to make a statement until the issue has been formally dealt with.
