Disobedience generated much discussion when it premiered at the 2017 Toronto Film Festival.

Based on Naomi Alderman's 2006 novel, the film shows an Orthodox Jewish community thrown into dissaray by the romance between two women.

Rachel Weisz, who herself grew up in Jewish north west London, plays Ronit Krushka who returns from exile to her childhood community following the death of her father. Here she reunites with Esti Kuperman (Rachel McAdams), reigniting the love they felt before Ronit was shunned and left the community.

Ms Weisz told the Los Angeles Times that the film is “about disobedience. It’s about obedience. It’s about how far we rebel from the place that we grew up in. Choosing your own path through that and not just doing what you’ve been conditioned to do by your family.”

Disobedience is on general release in America in April.
