The anti-Nazi poster boy

A retrospective exhibition of satirical anti-Nazi posters will be opening in London

articlemain

A retrospective exhibition of satirical anti-Nazi posters will be opening at the Four Corners Gallery in East London.

It is based on a set of posters by late German Dadaist artist John Heartfield, recently rediscovered in its original box in the Special Collections and Archives at Liverpool’s John Moores University.

Learning he was 5th on the Gestapo wanted list, Heartfield, born Helmut Herzfeld, escaped to Britain in 1938 where he was interned.

The exhibition features his work during his time as a refugee, alongside that of contemporary artists he inspired. It offers a timely message in the wake of renewed threats from the far right in Europe and the USA.

Heartfield/One Man’s War is part of the ongoing Insiders/Outsiders arts festival, which pays tribute to the contribution made by refugees from the Nazis to British culture. It continues until March, 2020.
