Fans plan demonstrations ahead of Wales-Israel clash

articlemain

Pro- and anti-Israel demonstrations are expected to take place ahead of Sunday's Wales versus Israel European Championship football qualifier in Cardiff.

The Zionist Federation (ZF) and grassroots groups North West Friends of Israel and Sussex Friends of Israel have organised transport to the game for activists who want to support the visiting side.

A ZF spokesman said it would be taking 200 fans, with the majority planning to participate in a "pre-match celebration of Israel".

However, the Palestine Solidarity Campaign's ongoing Red Card Israeli Racism drive is expected to attract more than 400 people.

A London-based Israeli dancing group's plans to perform outside Cardiff City Stadium before the game were scrapped after the Israeli Embassy raised concerns about security.

In a statement, the Israeli embassy said: “It is unfortunate that we are anticipating an anti-Israel demonstration in Cardiff, which does nothing to promote coexistence in the Middle East or to foster dialogue. Promoting hatred and a divisive ideology, is not only foreign to the sport of football and to sports in general, but cannot advance the cause of peace between Israelis and Palestinians.”
