Dave Whelan has been given another week by the Football Association to respond to a charge of racism.
The Wigan Athletic chairman facing action over his comments that Jews are “shrewd people” who “chase money more than everybody else”.
The FA said: “Following a request by Dave Whelan, the FA has granted him an extension to the date by which he had to reply to his misconduct charge for media comments. The Wigan Athletic chairman now has until 6pm on Friday 12 December 2014 to respond to the charge.”
The governing body has charged Mr Whelan with breaching two rules relating to improper conduct and racism.
The chairman, 78, is accused of comments which were “abusive and/or insulting and/or constitute improper conduct and/or bring the game into disrepute”.
There is a further allegation of an “aggravated breach” because the comments included “a reference to ethnic origin and/or race and/or nationality and/or religion or belief”.
Mr Whelan, who apologised for any offence caused by his remarks, has said he would step down as Wigan chairman if found guilty of racism.
