The Football Association has charged Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan with breaching its rules on racism.
The charge follows Mr Whelan’s comments last week in which he claimed Jews “chase money”.
After opening its investigation last week, the governing body received a submission from the club owner on Wednesday.
It subsequently decided to charge him with breaching two rules relating to improper conduct and racism.
Mr Whelan is accused of comments which were “abusive and/or insulting and/or constitute improper conduct and/or bring the game into disrepute”.
There is a further allegation of an “aggravated breach” because the comments included “a reference to ethnic origin and/or race and/or nationality and/or religion or belief”.
He has until 6pm on December 5 to respond to the charge.
Mr Whelan has said he would step down as Wigan chairman if found guilty of racism.
