Diane Abbott has won Hackney North and Stoke Newington, home to many of London’s strictly Orthodox community, who live in Stamford Hill.

The constituency is one of the last to declare — counting did not begin until 11.30am.

Labour’s Ms Abbott took 25,553 votes amid huge controversy with many voters angry that they had not been allowed to cast their votes, which Hackney Council blamed on high voter turnout.

Ms Abbott has an increased majority of 14,461, in a seat she has held since 1987, despite the tendency of the local Orthodox population to vote Conservative.

She has often been criticised for a hostile attitude towards Israel, but has stressed that she believes herself to be a critical friend of the state.

Before the election she told the JC: “I know there is a tendency in Stamford Hill to vote Conservative, but I have a good relationship with voters there.

Liberal Democrat Keith Angus was her closest contender with 11,092 votes. Jewish candidate, Tory Darren Caplan took home 6,759 votes.
