Grassroots supporters of Israel are threatening to withhold funding for the Board of Deputies in response to its reaction to the Gaza conflict.
Around 800 people have signed an online petition calling on the Board to take "overt and vociferous" action to challenge antisemitism. Many signatories are understood to be prepared to refuse to pay the portion of their synagogue fees which goes to the Board.
Campaigner Victoria Slotover, who set up the petition, said the Board and its president Vivian Wineman had failed to take her concerns seriously.
A Board spokesman confirmed Mr Wineman had met representatives of around half-a-dozen grassroots groups as part of a "listening exercise".
