Defiant Rhea Wolfson finds new way to run for senior Labour Party role after nomination defeat

articlemain

Rhea Wolfson is back in the running to replace Ken Livingstone on Labour’s National Executive Committee.

Ms Wolfson, the only Jewish candidate in the race, has announced that she will seek nomination in her local Constituency Labour Party.

Last month, Ms Wolfson stood for nomination in her Eastwood, Glasgow CLP. She needed the nomination to stay in the race to replace the former London Mayor, who was suspended from Labour after claiming Hitler supported Zionism, on the NEC.

However, the Scottish Labour activist failed to win the nomination after Jim Murphy, the ex Scottish Labour Party leader, urged members not to vote for her.

It was suggested that he questioned Ms Wolfson’s ties to Momentum, a hard-left group loyal to Jeremy Corbyn.

In a Facebook messaged posted this afternoon, Ms Wolfson, the former president of Oxford University’s Jewish and Israel societies, and ex chair of the Zionist Youth Council, said: “I was unsuccessful in securing a nomination from Eastwood, the CLP I grew up in.”

She added: “Since then, I have been overwhelmed by the support I have received from members up and down the UK. This has confirmed for me the reasons why I first wanted to stand: to promote a positive and credible democratic socialist agenda, and to empower members to fight for a more democratic party that can deliver change.

“I have transferred my membership to my other address and will seek nomination from my home CLP. If successful, I will be an officially nominated candidate for Labour's National Executive Committee."
