Baroness Deech and Geraldine Van Bueren are two of the eight lawyers who have today been named honorary QCs.

The title Queen’s Counsel Honoris Causa is given to lawyers: “who have made a major contribution to the law of England & Wales outside practice in the courts.”

Baroness Deech is a legal academic in family law and chair of the Bar Standards board. She is a former member of the Jewish Leadership Council and campaigns on the restitution of the property of Polish victims of the Holocaust.

Geraldine Van Bueren is a professor of human rights law at Queen Mary, London, a barrister specialising in human rights and one of the original drafters of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. She has previously written for the JC on the subject of human rights, particularly in South Africa, but first appeared in its pages in 1967, aged 11, being welcomed to the Young Israel League.

This honorary QCs and 84 QCs will be appointed at a ceremony in Westminster Hall on March 27.
