Comedian David Schneider is now available for barmitzvahs and weddings — no joke.

It might sound like a basis for a comedy sketch show, but the 46-year-old funnyman and scholar of Yiddish, is keen to embrace his Jewishness. He is offering himself as a master of ceremonies (MC) at simchahs.

A writer and comedy actor, Mr Schneider is best known for his appearances in award-winning television shows I’m Alan Partridge, Knowing Me Knowing You and The Day Today. Why would he want to spend his weekend at a stranger’s simchah? “I love doing Jewish performance and I thought it would be good to have a funny Jewish MC at a simchah,” he tells People. Besides, it is a chance for him to perform his “Jewish set” — the gags about matzo and Adon Olam might not go down so well at the Comedy Store, he says.

Mr Schneider, who has a doctorate in Yiddish from Oxford, has been writing a great deal of general comedy material of late, but it is his Jewish jokes that he is keen to tell. He is currently performing his “Jewish set” at UK universities.
