Manchester maths whizz Daniel Hyman certainly knows his numbers. The 17-year-old qualified for a top competition after his impressive performance in the UK Mathematics Trust (UKMT) Senior Mathematical Challenge.

Daniel scored 108 out of 125, and was subsequently chosen to represent his school, Manchester Grammar, among the nation's top mathematicians in the British Mathematical Olympiad. He was one of 1,000 students selected from 95,000 hopefuls. He now has the chance to compete in the final, the International Mathematical Olympiad, to be held in Amsterdam in July.

Daniel, who is studying maths, further maths, advanced further maths, physics and chemistry A-levels, loves maths. That figures.

He tells People: "It applies to the real word and it's all interconnected. And studying it doesn't close any doors." He says he was "kind of surprised to get through." And to reach the final would be "insane". He has also made it through to the Trust's senior team challenge, which takes place in February.

The UKMT run a series of maths challenges to encourage pupils to take an interest in maths and develop their skills. Daniel is hoping to go to Cambridge University to study, you guessed it, maths.
