Israeli pop star Noa Kirel has received criticism after attending the European MTV Awards in Düsseldorf, Germany, sporting an outfit adorned with Kanye West’s face and dozens of gold chains with the Star of David and Chai symbols.
The 21-year-old “Tikitas” singer told the Israeli public broadcaster Kan she chose to wear the outfit as “a fashion item with a message for the whole world; an item that signals that I am both Jewish and Israeli.
“We have been experiencing a lot of antisemitism, especially in light of Kanye West’s statements. I am proud to be an Israeli artist who represents Israel in the world.”
Kanye West has in recent weeks drawn criticism for a number of antisemitic comments and tirades which has also resulted in him losing a number of brand deals, including a partnership with Adidas estimated to be worth a quarter of a billion dollars.
On her Instagram just before the show, Ms Kirel posted a photo of herself covered in a blanket, with the caption “Are Ye Ready?” In reference to Kanye West’s adopted name.
Her fashion stylist told Kan that the pop star wanted “a crazy outfit, something everyone would remember.”

Ms Kirel, who has won “Best Israeli Act” at the MTV European Awards for the fifth-straight year on Sunday, will represent Israel at the Eurovision Song Contest next year.
I’m sorry but if you can’t see how Noa Kirel, Israel’s biggest pop star (and also a Jew), wearing an outfit with Kanye’s bloated face covered in jewelry of Jewish symbols to an award show in GERMANY of all places is not a statement of support for Kanye then idk what to tell you. https://t.co/ipl1rsCHmC

The up-and-coming star is now one of Israel’s most well-known and in-demand singers, subject to intense paparazzi coverage. Her Instagram page has over 1.5 million followers.
Ms Kirel completed her IDF service earlier this year in its “talent track” as part of a unique military band that performs for troops while also pursuing her career at the same time.
Her outfit garnered considerable discussion online, with many praising the singer for her stance against Mr West’s comments, while others unfamiliar with Ms Kirel and her background did not know if the outfit was adorned in support or against Mr West.
Mr West has doubled down on his recent antisemitic comments spouted across social media and during interviews.
Mr West’s comments had led to Balenciaga, Gap, JP Morgan Chase, Adidas, and Vogue all dropping their business dealings with the troubled artist, Making his net worth plummet from an estimated $1.5 billion to $400 million in just two months.
He was also temporarily suspended from both Twitter and Instagram for his remarks.
