A Jewish student from London who “always had a smile on his face” has died during a holiday to Albania.

According to local media, Zohar Dean Collins, 22, died in a tragic accident.

The University of Leeds physics student had travelled with friends to Dhërmi, a resort town on the Albanian Riviera, after finishing his third year of university.

In one of many tributes to Mr Collins, his former housemate Joe said: “I was with Zohar for his last day on this planet and I can tell you with confidence he was happy, full of life and enjoying the world around him as always.”

An online fundraiser set up to support Mr Collins’ parents and three siblings with the repatriation of his body and funeral costs has already raised over £22,000 from around 800 donors.

In a statement, Leeds University Physics Society recalled a “dear friend” and “incredibly valued member”.

It said: “The loss of Zohar leaves a huge hole in our lives and the committee will not be the same without him.”

Rabbi Nathan Godleman of the South London Liberal Synagogue told the JC: “We were shocked to learn of the death of Zohar, who attended cheder at SLLS and participated in summer camps and Israel tour with LJY-Netzer. He was widely loved and admired and people are very sad. The outpouring of support for Zohar’s family is a testament to him and I am sure that the light he gave forth will continue to shine brightly and be an influence for good in all our lives.”

LJY-Netzer youth worker Joe Shotton said all at the movement were “unbelievably heartbroken at this tragic news.

“We are all remembering Zohar as the witty, free spirited and warm person he was. He was truly special, always having a smile on his face and leading countless others to share that smile.

“Zohar joined LJY-Netzer in Nechalim (school years 7-8) and went on to become an amazing leader, filled with so much joy and passion for LJY and the young people he was engaging with.”

Writing on an online memorial page, a former teacher of Mr Collins remembered “an incredible young man. I loved teaching you. I loved your passion, determination, brilliant intelligence and wit, to name a few of your wonderful qualities.”

Former classmate Tal described him as “the life of the party and his energy was a joke. I am only now realising how many things I learnt from him. I miss you already man.”

Friend Ryan said Mr Collins was “always doing the things he loved whilst being a free spirit, which is one of the things that people loved about him”.
