It was just like old times for Ann Widdecombe as the ex-minister was quizzed by a former high-ranking civil servant at a Watford Synagogue event.
Her interrogator was longstanding Watford member Sir Leigh Lewis, who until retirement two years ago was permanent secretary at the Department of Work and Pensions.
During a lively interview, Ms Widdecombe spoke about her career and the people who had most influenced her. She also fielded audience questions, revealing her favourite prime minister — John Major — and discussing her views on immigration, NHS reform and her “life enhancing” stint on Strictly Come Dancing.
The one question she declined to respond to was a request for clarification of her infamous comment that there was “something of the night” about former Tory leader Michael Howard.
Watford board members Barry Freed and Clive Walters organised the event, which attracted a full house
of 150.
