Water worker sparkles for his charitable efforts

A West London teenager who has raised nearly £150,000 for WaterAid was presented with an award by Samantha Cameron in Downing Street on Tuesday.

George Rosenfeld, 16, found out about the charity's efforts to provide clean, safe water and sanitation to millions of people worldwide when looking for a cause to support during his barmitzvah year.

Having initially raised £13,000, he successfully campaigned at his school, City of London, to make WaterAid its charity of the year, bringing in £120,000 from events.

He spent his 14th birthday in Zambia seeing the difference WaterAid makes to people's lives and he has volunteered in its office and addressed supporters and school groups.

And George has generated further funds for WaterAid and other charities from a CD he recorded with three friends as The 4 Sons.

"People often mistakenly think that my generation doesn't care about some of the huge issues facing the global population," he said. "I am passionate about changing the fact that we live in a world of such inequality and injustice. While some have gadgets which simultaneously tell you the time, weather and football score, others lack basic human rights such as clean water."

George's Point of Light award recognises those who make a difference in their communities and inspire others.

David Cameron said that "as well as raising impressive amounts of money, he has worked tirelessly to educate his peers on the importance of WaterAid and inspired them to raise even more money".
