The United Synagogue is to help members in energy poverty by asking those in a better financial position to donate the £400 discount from the government that is being applied to energy bills.
Launching its “Donate your discount” campaign this week, the US said it was facing increasing demands for support. It has been helping struggling families during the pandemic by providing food parcels and household items and has long offered bursaries for its youth camps and Israel tour.
But rocketing energy costs have resulted in more people coming forward for help.
The energy fund will be the first time the US has distributed cash grants, with awards of up to £400 made.
Its Chesed department wants to ensure that those in need receive prompt support and anticipates dealing with hundreds of requests.
Chesed head Michelle Minsky said: “We’ve never given money out directly. But these are extraordinary times with more families in need than ever before.
“If you feel you do not need the £400 the government is giving to all households this winter, please consider donating it to a family in real difficulty.”
Alex Chapper, senior rabbi of the US’s largest congregation, Borehamwood and Elstree, said: “The cost of living has risen phenomenally, which has meant that in our community and beyond more and more people are struggling to make ends meet.
“In Borehamwood, there are people uncertain of how they are going to afford the basics. Five hundred meals are delivered to our members every month by US Chesed and we are supporting more people in our community than ever before.
“One of our members told us that they can’t afford to have proper meals every day — and they’re up at night worrying how they’re going to afford their heating bill this winter.
“That’s why I welcome the ‘Donate your discount’ campaign and encourage everyone who is fortunate enough to donate their £400 discount from the government to US Chesed, who will ensure the money goes to a family in need.”
Applications for aid should be made by December 1. Those applying will be questioned about their financial situation “but this will be held in the strictest confidence”.
