The premises of the former Merseyside kosher butcher that supplied the Titanic could be saved from demolition.

Galkoff’s green-tiled building in Liverpool city centre — considered of national importance by English Heritage — was under threat because of the development plans of Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, which recently purchased the site.

Now Einion Holland, the medical school’s director of strategic operations, says a conservation expert and structural engineer have been hired to survey the Galkoff’s building. “The school does value the historical heritage. We won’t dismiss the heritage of the city.”

Galkoff’s served the Merseyside Jewish community until 1979. Local councillor Nick Small, who has campaigned for the retention of the Grade II-listed building, said the medical school was “completely on board to acknowledge the importance of Galkoff’s in celebrating the Jewish cultural heritage of Liverpool”.
