Manchester movers and shakers raised more than £20,000 for charity from a contest based on the BBC's Strictly Come Dancing.

Money from Dancing Strictly was generated through dancer sponsorship and ticket sales from the 500-plus people at the event at Manchester's Central Hall on Saturday evening.

EastEnders and Shameless star Jody Latham joined radio DJ Adam Cole and journalist Angela Epstein on the judging panel. They chose James Lindemann, who danced with Adele Librae, and Kerrith Harris and Andrew Stone as the pick of the bunch. The former pair also took the people's award, based on the text votes of audience members.

A co-organiser was Jane Clynes, whose Leeds Dancing Strictly has earned £80,000 for local charities. "We are delighted that Mancheser thought so much of our event to do it there," she said. "It's a fabulous community event."

Co-organiser Melanie Verby said the Manchester version would become annual. "It was a fantastic success."

Proceeds will benefit Manchester Maccabi, the Federation of Jewish Services, Magen David Adom and the Christie cancer hospital.
