Ravenswood resident Lawrence Black has been selected for the British team for the Special Olympics European Games in Poland in September.

The 56-year-old will compete in the shot put, 50 metres sprint and 400 metres walk and will be hoping to add to the two silvers and a bronze won at the national Special Olympics last year.

He will be accompanied by Nigel Trumper, the sport and leisure co-ordinator at Ravenswood, Norwood's Berkshire residential community for adults with learning disabilities. Mr Trumper, who has been chosen as a Team GB coach, said that for Lawrence Black, "it's the well-deserved culmination of 20 years' hard work, taking part in local, regional and national athletics events".

The athlete, who has multiple learning disabilities, has taken part in many of Norwood's domestic and international bike rides. "I am very happy to be selected for the Great Britain squad," he said.

"I will try to win gold in these events."
