More than 60 urban hikers took a late night tour of the Jewish East End as part of a "Soup Walk" to raise money for Israeli Holocaust survivors living in poverty.
Meir Panim UK organised the 10km sponsored walk, which set off from Liverpool Street station at 10pm. Walkers raised £10,000 for those in need in Israel.
When the participants finished the walk at midnight, they were given a cup of soup at Sandy's Row Synagogue, as a reminder of the food served to Jewish immigrants from charitable soup kitchens when they arrived in the East End during the last century. The tour visited many shuls and places of interest in the area, including the old JFS site.
The event was chaired by Meir Panim's Sir Erich Reich, who escaped the Nazis on the Kindertransport aged four. He said: "Soup kitchens were common in the East End of London and run by charitable organisations and nothing has changed. Today in Israel, we run a network of 14 soup kitchens. The funds we raised on the walk will go to those underprivileged Israeli citizens including Holocaust survivors."
