Synagogues and youth organisations throughout the country will be participating in Jami’s Mental Health Awareness Shabbat this weekend.

Joey Kolirin, who overcame mental health problems and is now a mental health coach, will share his story with the Stanmore and Canons Park and Borehamwood and Elstree United congregations.

The Saatchi Shul is organising a milkshakes and mindfulness session. Maccabi footballers will observe “one minute for mental health”, enabling players, managers and supporters to ponder their mental wellbeing.

And among activities beyond the weekend, Rabbi Shalom Hammer will address North-West London meetings about the events leading to his daughter’s death, highlighting some mental health challenges.

Jami chief executive Laurie Rackind said this year’s awareness weekend theme was community.

“There is no doubt that by coming together to talk and learn about mental health, we gain more power as individuals and as groups to support all those around us,” he told the JC.

“Feeling comfortable to openly talk about the problems we are having, in the same way we may talk about physical illness, brings us closer to creating a more accepting and inclusive community where no one has to feel alone in their struggles.”

The charity has also produced a toolkit of resources, including rabbis’ sermons, age-appropriate activities for school and youth groups and suggestions on conversation starters.

Along with further information on awareness weekend events, the toolkit is available by visiting jamiuk.org/mhas.
