When the festivals come around this year, members of the small Shenley United congregation will no longer need to consider themselves "wandering Jews".

That is because for the first time in its six-year history, the 120-family Hertfordshire congregation will hold its Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur services in the same venue - the Old Chapel village community centre where it has been conducting its weekly Shabbat services.

In previous years, services have had to be switched between the local cricket club, a school, an old people's home and other temporary locations.

"Maintaining the same venue will seem like a real luxury for us," said a Shenley spokesperson, "especially since it saves us having to schlep the Ark, the sifrei Torah, the prayer books and everything else we need from place-to-place."
