The congregation formed by the recent merger of Edgware Masorti Synagogue and Elstree and Borehamwood Masorti Community will be known as Shema –— South Herts and Edgware Masorti.
The title was chosen through a poll of members, who will also take part in a competition to design a logo that will symbolise the spirit of the name.
“South Herts and Edgware Masorti tells people where we are,” said co-chair Steven Lux. “But Shema also says pay attention, we are open for business, while, of course, having immediate resonance from our daily prayers.”
Leaders are seeking suitable premises near Borehamwood to cater for the growing numbers of young Jewish families in the area.
In the meantime, they are continuing to hold services in both Edgware and Borehamwood, plus combined events including Yomtov services and bar/batmitzvahs.
After the move, the merged congregation has pledged to ensure the continuation of services in Edgware for “legacy EMS members” unable to travel to Borehamwood.
Rabbi Danny Newman continues to serve the community, having previously acted as joint minister of the two congregations.
