Sheffield's Orthodox congregation has become the first northern community to join the London-based United Synagogue.
US president Stephen Pack hailed "an immensely significant moment" in the history of the US after members of the 250-member community voted for the move by an overwhelming majority on Sunday.
Sheffield president Edward Patnick said: "Our proposed membership of the United Synagogue brings with it incredible service provision, resources and long-term security. We've been welcomed by the US with open arms and we look forward to working closely with them on this exciting new chapter of our history."
Mr Pack said the US felt "extremely privileged" that Sheffield had agreed to join. "Of course if any similar opportunities arise with other provincial communities, we stand ready to welcome them as well."
The small Peterborough community is an affiliated member of the US and Luton Synagogue voted to join last year.
