Sha’arei Tsedek North London Reform Synagogue is celebrating its 60th anniversary with an eco-friendly campaign.

The Whetstone shul has partnered with Barnet Council to plant a magnolia tree in the green opposite its Whetstone premises.

To mark Tu Bishvat, a virtual event was broadcast via Facebook with contributions from MP Theresa Villiers, Barnet Mayor Caroline Stock, shul co-chairs Richard Woolf and Andrea Laurence and Rabbi Shulamit Ambalu.

The community’s younger members will make additional plantings later in the year.

It is also providing plants for a sensory walkway in the outdoor space at Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospice in Barnet, which has faced increased demand for its services during the pandemic.

Addressing the online launch of the diamond jubilee, Mr Woolf said: “This milestone gives us the chance to celebrate our journey, honour our leaders past and present, reflect on our achievements and lay the foundations for future generations.”

Its “Planting for the Future” project “reflects our commitment to our social responsibility, our legacy for future generations and our responsibility to the environment”.

Members unable to engage online are being contacted regularly by phone and letter to keep them connected to the celebrations.

In addition, Sha’arei Tsedek is inviting congregants to submit memories and photos for a digital and printed archive.
