Radlett Synagogue members have raised more than half the money needed to start work on Project Renewal, a £1.75 million rebuilding scheme which received planning consent four months ago.
At a community meeting convened to report on progress, 100 members were told that more than £400,000 had been collected towards the initial target of £750,000. Project chair Paul Krisman hoped that building work could start after the High Holy-Days.
Discussing the limitations of the current building, Rabbi Leo Dee said that "every community must have a shul that is fitting for its members. And this one is no longer fitting for Radlett, not in size, nor in facilities, nor in decor."
The synagogue building - the one-time Radlett Village Hall - will be integrated with the neighbouring house, also owned by the shul. There will further be a substantial interior and exterior makeover.
Enhanced amenities will include a multi-function kiddush hall and expanded synagogue space, classrooms, cloakrooms, kitchen and disabled facilities.
