Bristol's Liberal rabbi has demonstrated solidarity with the local Jamia Mosque after attackers threw bacon sandwiches at the building, verbally abused worshippers and left an England flag with a "No Mosques" slogan outside.
Rabbi Monique Mayer addressed a tea party thrown by the mosque to acknowledge the outpouring of support from all sections of the community. She told the 400 guests that the Hebrew for the phrase, "love your neighbour as yourself", translated as "you should love your neighbour who is like you, meaning that we are all made in God's image and are all like each other. [So] there's an imperative to take action.
"When you see an injustice towards someone else, do something about it. If you see people hurting, support them. Instead of feeling warm and fuzzy towards everyone, you need to be active."
She added that when she heard about the attack - for which four people have been charged - she called Muslim contacts asking if there was anything she could do to help.
After the fatal attack on a Toulouse Jewish school in 2012, Jamia Mosque members attended a solidarity event in support of the Jewish community.
