Eighty parents of pupils at Glasgow’s Calderwood Lodge Primary — Scotland’s only Jewish school — attended a consultation meeting to discuss its proposed relocation.

The plans of East Renfrewshire Council would see the school transfer to the heart of the Jewish community in Newton Mearns as part of a shared campus with a new Catholic school scheduled to open in 2017.

Director of education Mhairi Shaw assured parents that the council was committed to retaining the school’s Jewish identity whether it remained in Newlands — four miles from East Renfrewshire — or relocated. However, the proposed new building would provide modern facilities for pupils.

Some parents suggested that Calderwood’s ethos as a small community school could be harmed by a move. However, the majority view was that more discussion was needed on the proposals.

Parents’ council chair Colin Cowan said: “We got some very varied views and I couldn’t tell on the whole whether people were for it. It’s something we have to look at and we’ll gather all the parents’ views.”

The Jewish community’s position is required by the end of the year, when the council will move into a more formal consultation process, plus a costing and feasibility study.

If the community opposes the plan, the school will stay on its current site. An open forum on the proposals will be held by Glasgow Jewish Representative Council on Monday.
