Nursery pupils evacuated as Storm Doris gales damage roof of Elstree synagogue

Borehamwood and Elstree Synagogue, home to one of the biggest congregations in the country, has been evacuated over fears its roof might blow off as a result of Storm Doris.

Ninety nursery children were among those who were evacuated by police this morning, after being called by the synagogue's caretaker. He said gale force winds had loosened metal strips on the roof. Roads around the synagogue were closed as firefighters attempted to secure the roof.

The synagogue hopes to find alternative premises for the nursery while the fire brigade assess the damage.

A United Synagogue spokesperson said: “Our first concern is for the health and safety of all those who were present and we are thankful nobody has been injured. We are extremely grateful to the emergency services for their support.

"Over the next couple of days, we will do everything we can to ensure community activity can continue, while ensuring the safety of the community and its neighbours."

Following repairs, it is anticipated that the majority of weekend services will run as normal on the Croxdale Road site.
