The Jewish Museum is one of three to receive Arts Council England funding for an educational programme for primary and secondary school students.

Over the next three years, the Camden museum, along with Valence House Museum in Barking and the Imperial War Museum will give 12,000 pupils an understanding of history and citizenship.

In the Jewish Museum’s case, primary pupils from Hackney and Tower Hamlets will learn about the contribution of the Jewish community from the influx of immigrants in Victorian Britain to the end of the Second World War.

Year seven children will attend workshops in civic duty during wartime and discuss ideas of change and responsibility through studying the barmitzvah and the Jewish approach to the coming of age.

The three selected museums will share a £500,000 grant for the educational project. “I am delighted that this grant will enable the Jewish Museum to expand its award-winning schools programme,” said museum chief executive Abigail Morris.
