Four youth movements have issued an open letter condemning the racism connected to the annual Yom Yerushalayim march, celebrating the 1967 liberation of Jerusalem.

Noam, RSY-Netzer, LJY-Netzer and Habonim Dror have called on the Israeli authorities to guard against "the expression of racist attitudes" during this year's march.

Being staged on Sunday, on the eve of Ramadan, it will again pass through Jerusalem's Muslim Quarter.

In the past, chants of "death to Arabs" have been common and residents have been subject to intimidation.

The movements have urged that the event be marked as "a celebration of the vibrant, diverse and meaningful city we know Jerusalem to be.

"Initiatives such as handing flowers to Arab residents... show how Yom Yerushalayim can and should be celebrated and how the day can be used to promote tolerance and understanding between all of the city's people."
