Maccabi GB is looking to satisfy post-Olympic interest in sporting participation by setting up a variety of taster sessions for young Londoners.
From October, the organisation will run subsidised sessions in sports including athletics, track cycling, table tennis, badminton, squash and futsal.
Chief executive Martin Berliner pointed out that, following British medal success in a range of events, “we think it’s really important young people have the opportunity to try different sports, to see if they’re good at them
“It’s not just the elite athletes we’re looking for.
“What is really lacking is the opportunity to do sports for fun and that’s something we hope these events will also create.”
Those at the sessions will receive professional coaching and experience top-level facilities such as the new indoor athletics track at Saracens’ Allianz Park in Barnet. Maccabi is also considering running introductory events in regional communities.
“We always experience a bounce in interest after Wimbledon,” Mr Berliner added. “We’re hoping the Olympics will provide even more”.
