Liverpool’s Childwall Hebrew Congregation is promoting its refurbished mikveh in a bid to attract brides and young couples.

Built in the 1970s, the facility has been neglected for some years, forcing potential users to travel 40 miles to Manchester. Now Kol Nidre appeal funds and donations from businessmen have funded a new entrance hall, refitted changing rooms and enabled extensive redecoration.

The mikveh will be officially reopened on Sunday by Merseyside Jewish Representative Council president Arnold Lewis.

Childwall’s Rabbi Mordechai Wollenberg believed the improvements would change impressions of the facility. It would appeal “to the younger crowd who may not be shul-goers but want meaning and tradition in their lives”.
