Participants in Sunday's Leeds Limmud enjoyed lectures on subjects as diverse as teaching the Holocaust to Muslim pupils and salsa dancing at Buenos Aires barmitzvahs.
The 50 topics also included discrimination towards Ethiopian Jews in Israel and how humour aided Jewish survival. Jonathan Arkush, Jon Silverman, Clarissa Hyman, Dina Brawer and Clive Lawton were among the speakers.
"It was a juggling act to get the correct balance at each time-slot that would appeal to visitors," said co-chair Linda Rosen. "I certainly think we've achieved that."
The one criticism was a marked absence of youth among the 300 turnout, but Ms Rosen said organisers "were looking into that for next year. We have tried to bring youngsters on board in the past. The problem was knowing which age group to target. We are building up a good relationship with The Zone youth centre and it is important to plan for the future."
Ms Rosen recalled that Leeds was the first city to stage a one-day Limmud. "Evidence shows we were the inspiration for other towns and cities to stage a similar event."
