Rabbi Alexandra Wright is Liberal Judaism’s new president, succeeding Rabbi Dr Andrew Goldstein, who served for 10 years.
Senior rabbi at the Liberal Jewish Synagogue St John’s Wood since 2004, she has been a key figure within Progressive Judaism for three decades, noted for her work on inclusivity and education.
Liberal Judaism CEO Rabbi Charley Baginsky described her as “a leading voice - committed, passionate, wise and thoughtful.
“I am one of those who as a woman rabbi looked to Alex for inspiration and encouragement. She always provided it.”
Speaking after her election at the Liberal Judaism AGM, Rabbi Wright said she felt honoured to be following in the footsteps of so many respected figures – other previous presidents have included Rabbi John Rayner and Baroness Rabbi Julia Neuberger.
“My earliest memories are of being taken by my parents to the LJS for the High Holy-Days and listening to the sonorous voice of then president Rabbi Dr Leslie Edgar.
“I hope I can be a worthy successor to all my predecessors who did so much to disseminate our proud heritage and the significant message of Liberal Judaism – a Judaism that aspires to be sincere in its worship, incisive in its teaching and inclusive and caring in the work of its communities.”
Rabbi Goldstein will become a vice-president, along with Ann Kirk, Bob Kirk, Dr Edward Kessler, Baroness Gillian Merron, Jane Greenfield, Josie Kinchin and Frank Maxwell.
