Kaiser Chiefs front man Ricky Wilson turned celebrity music judge on Sunday in a contest which raised almost £20,000 for communal charities.

Based on the format of ITV's The Choir That Rocks, Leeds Choirs Rock was a "sing-out" involving 220 members of Jewish and other choirs. The audience of 500 voted by text for their favourites.

Leeds choir Gay Abandon won the contest, also featuring the Manchester King David High School Chamber Choir and the Leeds Mixed Voices, including Jewish performers.The compere was Leeds Radio Aire DJ Rich Williams.

Organising committee member Nikki Cohen said the "spectacular evening had wonderful feedback from within the community and much further afield. Most importantly, we have raised a huge amount of money for charity, which is what it's all about."

Proceeds will be shared between the the Zone Jewish youth club, the Leeds Jewish Representative Council and the Leeds Teenage Cancer Trust.
