The Jewish Lads' and Girls' Brigade will be one of 19 organisations leading national citizenship schemes from the summer of 2012.

JLGB will run a pilot scheme for Jewish and non-Jewish 16-year-olds from Redbridge and the surrounding area in a kosher and Shabbat-friendly environment.

The scheme will include adventure activities such as archery and abseiling. There will also be opportunities to learn skills skill like gardening, cookery or photography, which will be employed in a social action project of the group's choice.

Brigade chief executive Neil Martin said: "It's a great thing for teens to do when they return from Israel tour. We want to get people hooked on volunteering and really doing something worthwhile for their local care homes, museums and special schools."

A Conservative manifesto pledge, the National Citizen Service is intended to get 30,000 16-year-olds from diverse backgrounds involved in volunteering and challenging activities.

Civil Society Minister Nick Hurd said: "I'm delighted we can begin to roll this out further and move towards the government's ultimate goal to make this a rite of passage and give every 16-year-old the chance to get involved."
