It's stand and deliver as Lions improve home

articlemain

The opening of a 200-seater stand at Maccabi London Lions' Alpha Stadium in Barnet was celebrated with a game against an Arsenal Charity XI including former first-teamers Chris Whyte and Jimmy Carter.

Watched by a crowd of more than 400, the Arsenal side won 7-3 against a Lions team. The 37 Lions who took some part in the match included Daniel and Jack Mattey, sons of the late Alan Mattey, in whose memory the stand is named.

A £330,000 development scheme has also included new floodlights, turnstiles, standing areas, fencing and refurbished changing rooms.

Lions chairman Andy Landesberg said the stadium looked "incredible" with a full house on opening night. "Everyone wanted to be part of it - players, families and supporters."

Alan Mattey's widow, Leanne, donated to the project. The Kyte and Landesberg families also contributed and more than £86,000 came from the Premier League's Football Stadia Improvement Fund.

Mr Landesberg said the enhancements were "about delivering something aspirational to the kids". For the first team, riding high in the Herts Senior County Premier League, he added: "We can grow at the speed we are comfortable with and that's important."
