A Salford grandmother is the unlikely catalyst behind a national rap competition for Jewish schools.

KosherRap.uk is the brainchild of Manchester King David Primary teacher Bracha Dadash, 49. The donor-funded project will give schools and cheders the resources to compose, record and shoot a video. The winning entry will be turned into a professional music video.

In July, Quill Films shot a video of Manchester King David Primary's The Kosher Rap after Mrs Dadash found sponsors to cover the budget.

"When I saw the rap music children are hooked on, I got into its beat," she said. "But I also thought, 'let's use rap in a positive way to teach Jewish values'. We've never seen pupils so engaged with learning." Her husband now calls her the "rap rebbetzen" and she has "written a few more raps. But it's nothing new to Judaism. Open up any siddur and you'll see rhythmic rhymes chanted by Jews for centuries."
